Stuff We Love: Martin Lim and Reitmans' Holiday Dress Capsule Collection

$

0

Reitmans, Canada’s largest women’s retailer, has collaborated with Montreal design duo Martin Lim to launch a capsule collection this November that will have Canadians clamouring for one of their perfect party frocks.

Danielle Martin and her husband Pao Lim have been collaborating under the Martin Lim label since 2011, garnering industry praise within the fashion industry, and it's easy to see why. Their Reitmans collection has a chic and effortless appeal, with jewel toned colour blocking and a vibrant art deco vibe.

We especially loved the play of layered fabric in the long black “Martini” dress and the cascading tail of fabric on the “Lola” mock halter dress. Gorgeous! And with a price point between $85-120, it makes our holiday party plans feel suddenly very attainable.

With six regular sized, two plus sized and two petite garments, we’re pretty sure you’ll be able to find a holiday dress that you can slip on and feel like a million bucks.

Just months after her surprise split from husband Tom Cruise last June, Katie Holmes announced that she’d be embarking on a new kind of partnership, this time with cosmetics brand Bobbi Brown. And today, the first look at her modeling debut with the makeup giant has finally been revealed.

In this sneak-peek pic, a glammed-up Holmes wears the new Long-Wear Cream Shadow Sticks, which will launch later in the month, as her long locks blow in the breeze (or, we’re guessing, in the air from industrial fans at the photo shoot).

"I’ve always been a fan of [Bobbi Brown] makeup, because it’s so easy to apply,” said Katie during September fashion week, when Brown herself served as lead makeup artist for Katie's signature line, Holmes & Yang. "I met [Bobbi], and she is just a lovely person—so generous. I think that it’s so exciting what she’s built with this company.”

The cosmetics guru has likewise described Katie as "the epitome of the modern 'Bobbi woman'… a classic natural beauty, entrepreneur and mother"—seemingly the ideal choice for the brand's first-ever celebrity face.

Katie added that she finds Bobbi Brown’s "color palettes aren't extreme, so when I first started wearing makeup it felt comfortable and I didn’t feel like I had too much on."

Sounds like we know what Suri’s first pick will be in a few years.

Looking good is a big, fat self-esteem booster. And yet, sometimes it’s hard to afford the glamorous life. Which leads us to the inevitable: why do women have to pay the price to feel pretty? The answer is: you don’t…at least not always. Here’s how to primp your way to a smoking-hot date, cocktails with the girl’s, a red-carpet event and your best friend’s wedding and still have change left for the cab ride home.

NARS

The Venue: The NARS counter at Department stores
The Look: Understated, but super sexy.
The Timing: For date night with your man. “NARS will make you feel like a million bucks,” says Sheri Stroh, a Toronto-based makeup artist who has painted the famous faces of Coco Rocha, Selena Gomez and Paula Abdul, to name a few. “Since it was founded and developed by a make-up artist, you know you are not only getting amazing quality, but also something that is steeped in creativity; it makes you want to have fun, go more fashion, but not take it too far so that you scare your date off!”
The Rules: Taking a 20-minute break from window-shopping the designer clothing racks at the luxe department (like Toronto’s Holt Renfrew) store and settling down in front of the NARS counter for a complimentary makeover is completely acceptable. Calling ahead to book an appointment is also welcomed.
Word to the wise: If you don’t want to spend, leave your wallet at home, otherwise you’ll be hard pressed to not purchase one of the brand’s gorgeous items. Trust us.
The Must-Have: NARS blush in Orgasm ($32)

Sephora

The Venue: Sephora
The Look: Authentically, girlishly, you.
The Timing: When you’re heading out for cocktails with the girls and want to show off a different side to your personality.
The Rules: There really aren’t any. Sephora’s chipper staff will touch up your face for free almost any time so dropping in is acceptable. “Sephora is crammed with every type of make-up out there,” says Stroh. “It's not behind a counter either, so if you want help or an application or lesson, staff are around, but you get to test and try everything your heart desires for as long as you want without the pressure to buy.”
Word to the wise: schedule your pop-by for a time when you know the store won’t be bursting with customers.
The Must-Have: Benefit Cosmetics Fine One-One ($30): a sheer brightening cheek and lip balm that glides on in pink champagne, sheer watermelon and soft coral.

M.A.C.

The Venue: M.A.C stores and makeup counters at The Bay
The Look: Va-va-voom glamour.
The Timing: When you have a red carpet or super-chic night out and need to look H.O.T.
The Rules: The black-clad makeup artists are happy to take clients who walk up to their counters, although phoning ahead for an appointment is preferred. “MAC was originally developed for make-up artists and thanks to this history and their involvement in fundraising, such as Fashion Cares, they have catered to basically everyone, not just women who want to look pretty and natural,” says Stroh. “They’re known everywhere around the world and it has allowed them to create ads and campaigns that push the limits and make people re-think how they do their make-up.”
Word to the wise: Touch ups like trying on a lipstick or adding a cat’s eye to your look are free. M.A.C stores will, however, ask for a fee for their makeovers (so double check when you book your appointment), while their makeup counters will anticipate you’ll purchase their products or a gift card. But it’s worth it. The artists take their time and when you walk out the door you’ll think you’ve never looked better.
The Must-have: M.A.C Viva Glam Nicki lipstick ($18).

He Looks Good in Underwear -- and 3 More Things We Love About David Beckham!

$
0
0

David Beckham knows good advertising! The soccer star has just released some new photos for his H&M underwear line -- featuring, of course, Beckham wearing his H&M underwear line. Consider us sold!

In the new ad campaign, shot by filmmaker and Madonna ex Guy Ritchie, Beckham struts around in his boxer briefs against a wooded background. Just as we've come to expect, Beckham is showing plenty of skin (not to mention tattoos, and those insanely perfect abs). If we keep buying his underwear, will David promise to keep making these ads forever?

To be fair, Beckham's willingness to objectify himself is just one of the things we love about him. Here are three non-underwear-related reasons why Beckham is the best.

1. He's now playing soccer strictly for charity.
One of the world's highest-paid athletes, Beckham could have easily kept raking in the wealth. Instead, he has decided to give his future earnings with his new team, Paris Saint-Germain, to a French children's charity. "I’m not sure it’s something that’s been done before but it is something I’m very passionate about," Beckham said of donating his salary, which totals around $3.5 million a year. That should make a lot of kids very happy!

2. He's a good role model.
Not only has he instilled his sons with his impeccable fashion sense -- particularly Romeo, 10, who's now a Burberry model -- but David takes time out from the glamorous life to think of those less fortunate, like the wounded soldiers and teenage cancer patients he visited in January.

3. He knows his wife's career is important, too.
David could have received a record-setting salary by signing on to play soccer in China. Instead, he picked Paris, the international hub of fashion -- which is, not coincidentally, his wife Victoria Beckham's first love. "As a family, we are all very excited about what lies ahead for 2013," the singer-turned-designer told Elle UK. Though Victoria and the four children (Brooklyn, 14; Romeo; Cruz, 7; and Harper, 1) will be staying in London, we anticipate they'll all be regular visitors to the City of Lights.

As for us, we'll continue to be regular visitors to Beckham's Facebook page, where he has promised to post more photos from his H&M shoot.

Is There Someone Hotter Than David Beckham? Why He Used a Body Double

$
0
0

Have you been swooning over David Beckham in his drool-worthy new H&M underwear ad? Well, we've got news for you: It's not all Beckham!

Yes, H&M has confirmed that the 37-year-old soccer stud used a body double for parts of the Guy Richie-directed commercial. So, why would one of the world's sexiest stars, who happens to have a flawlessly ripped physique, need to call in someone else to take his place? Well, it certainly wasn't because he was feeling self-conscious about his abs.

"David was very involved in the advert including doing most of the stunts," a representative says in a statement. "Due to his tight schedule a body double was used in smaller parts of the video."

Beckham also set the record straight, tweeting at a fan, "Hi @lizwren yes I did pretty much all my own stunts, was good fun //Beckham."

Fans and gossip outlets had gotten all up in arms when they first realized that Beckham had used a double, but what's the big deal? There are some decent stunts in the video, which you can watch again below, so it's impressive that Becks did "pretty much all" of them. Plus, it sheds light on the fact there is another male specimen out there who looks that darn good in undies!

Despite the body double revelation, we'd still argue this is a successful ad campaign. It's funny, it's sexy (regardless of the fact it's not 100 percent Beckham) and it shows off one nice pair of briefs. If we can forgive Beyonce for lip-synching at the presidential inauguration, we can sure ignore the fact that Beckham called upon his abs twin for a tiny bit of help with this campaign.

7 Star Looks That Would Violate the Grammys' Prudish New Rule

$

Rock stars, take note. The 2013 Grammy Awards (CBS, Sunday, 8 p.m. ET) are going to be a classy affair. You know that hankie you're planning to wear as a dress? Inappropriate.

According to a new CBS-issued email obtained by Deadline.com, a new dress code has been put in place for this year's awards show. The memo alerts various talent managers and agents that the network is cracking down -- and their celebrity clients had better follow the rules.

Here's a segment from the email:

"Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack...Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could  possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible 'puffy' bare skin exposure."

Now, why on earth would CBS feel the need to issue such a specific directive?  Well, in the past, some awards show attendees and perfomers may have stretched the boundaries a teensy bit. Under the new statutes, the following attire would not be permitted.

1. Jennifer Lopez: 2000 Grammy Awards

Source: Scott Gries/ImageDirect

All right, J Lo. The Grammy committee did entice you to attend its 2000 Awards Show by nominating your hit, "Waiting for Tonight." But they had no idea you would wear an open-front Versace dress without buttons or zippers. (Or that it would become an iconic fashion statement that would inspire young singers for years to come!)

2. Toni Braxton: 2001 Grammy Awards

Source: SGranitz/WireImage

Ms. Braxton, while the Grammy committee appreciates the work it took to look this fit at 40, this Richard Tyler getup did not qualify as an actual dress.

3. Rihanna: 2011 Grammy Awards

Source: John Shearer/WireImage

Wrapping yourself in Christmas tree garland doesn't count, either, Rihanna! The new rules clearly warn you to "avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples." And, with this look, you're treading in dangerous territory.

4. Lil' Kim: 1999 Video Music Awards

Source: Kevin Mazur/WireImage

As for you, Lil' Kim, your pasty-and-pantsuit outfit might have flown at MTV, and it might even have delighted Diana Ross (who couldn't check her impulse to touch your boob). But the suits at CBS would kindly request that in future, you bring a cardigan to cover up.

5. Katy Perry: 2011 Perfume Launch

Source: Victor Chavez/WireImage

Ms. Perry, you're scaring the little children who listen to your sugary pop tunes. If you arrive at the Grammy's wearing anything like this boob-baring dress, you will be escorted off the premises, and that's undeniable.

6. Rose McGowan: 1998 Video Music Awards

Source: Barry King/WireImage

Buttocks curves, buttocks crack, front boob, side boob. We must tell you, Rose McGowan: In this outrageous dress, you broke pretty much every single one of the new wardrobe rules!

7. Michelle Dockery: 2013 SAG Awards

Source: Jason Kempin/Getty Images

Don't expect brazen pop stars to be the only ones bending the rules! The sleek black gown that Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery wore last month seems stylish and conservative -- but with that blatant side boob, it simply wouldn't fly. Of course, Lady Mary, the Grammy committee recognizes that you are not a singer and therefore will probably not attend the upcoming ceremony. But in case someone asks you to be his date (say, Lil' Wayne, perhaps?), please be sure to cover your bosoms. Being male, your date is free to wear what he likes.

Jennifer Lopez Pulls an Angelina Jolie at the Grammys: Who Did It Better?

$
0
0

Jennifer Lopezmight have adhered to the this year's Grammy Awards fashion memo issued by CBS by not showing her genitals or "puffy" bits, but that doesn't mean she didn't pull out a PG-13 rated outfit. No, our beloved J.Lo Angelina Jolie-ed her way all down the Grammys red carpet, baring a whole lot of leg but leaving her top covered.

"They didn't say anything about leg!" she told Ryan Seacrest about her black Anthony Vaccarello gown. "I thought I was being such a good girl! A little shoulder, a little leg."

It's not quite as risque as her infamous 2000 Grammys dress that likely started CBS' crusade against boobs, buttocks and genitalia to begin with. But who Jolie'd it best? Should we start saying people J.Lo'd it now? We decided to pit these two gorgeous women against one another and decide who showed that extra leg best.

ANGELINA JOLIE

Fashion or statement: Definitely fashion, but the Oscar winnner made sure that leg made a statement. A high slit in a long gown is nothing new, but Jolie sticking her leg out of the black Atelier Versace gown at the 2012 Oscars made it meme-worthy.
Sexiness factor: Her this look would have been way sexier if she didn't seem like she was gong to break in half with every step.
Overall impact: Considering the influence Jolie's gown has had on the way we look at leg slits in dresses, she's going to get to keep this one for a bit longer.

JENNIFER LOPEZ

Fashion or statement: Statement, statement, statement. She didn't bare her chest, but Lopez sure rocked her thigh. Not that there's anything wrong with it: If we had Lopez's leg, we'd want to be a bit rebellious too.
Sexiness factor: We're going to have to give Lopez the sexiness award over Jolie.
Overall impact: Lopez made her feelings about the Grammys dress code be known with this look, but she's still going to be known best for her plunging 2000 green Versace gown -- and for good reason.

Welcome, Tar-jay! Target Launches First Stores in Canada

Bargain hunters and design-savvy shoppers alike are rejoicing as Target has started to open their first stores in Canada. Three stores opened today in Ontario and a crowd of eager people braved the chilly winter weather to be the first to shop in the U.S. retailer’s first stores. Another 21 will open in Ontario this month—although the retailer’s official grand opening is set for April—and the plans are for a total of   124 stores set to open nationwide by the end of this year.

Target—pronounced Tar-jay by those being cheeky—is being welcomed by open arms by not only budget-conscious folk but by the stylish set as well. No longer will fashion lovers have to plan cross-border treks to shop for the retailers latest designer collaborations (which have included Proenza Schouler, Jason Wu, Missoni and Prabal Gurung). Besides the covetable limited-edition collections, Target is also known for staples from top names in their respective industries. Look forward to everyday access to quality cosmetics and tools from makeup artist Sonia Kashuk, cooking tools and food products from Food Network favourite Giada de Laurentiis and home decor items from interior designer Nate Berkus (not to mention the many house brands, such as Archer Farms and Liz Lange for Target Maternity).

But homegrown brands are not being left out in the cold. You’ll be able to find goods from Canuck favourites at the big-box retailer such as Toronto-based houseware brand Umbra and exclusive Roots Outfitters apparel from Roots for a limited time.
Not everyone is likely so keen on Target’s foray north of the border, though. Other retailers such as Loblaws and Walmart, not to mention smaller stores, after all, now have another major competitor to contend with. Will Target hit the bullseye when it comes to meeting the needs of the Canadian market? We sure hope so—convenient shopping, designer collabs and great prices? Bring it on.

Target's Beauty Line: 5 Simple Makeup Tips from Pixi Beauty’s Petra Strand

$

Just because you only have a few minutes to do your makeup doesn’t mean you have to look like you got ready on the run. With U.S. big-box retailer Target now starting to roll out their stores in Canada, one of the brands we’ll now have access to is Pixi Beauty, the cosmetics line from makeup artist Petra Strand. The California-based makeup pro has designed the line to be simple and multitasking. “We launched our store in London 12 years ago with the saying in the window, ‘I just want to look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep,’ and it still perfectly sums up Pixi Beauty’s philosophy,” says Strand.

We spent 10 minutes chatting with Strand about her expert tips and tricks on how to get ready quickly and her personal makeup musts.

How many products do you have in your handbag?

Only two! Illuminating Tint & Conceal for quick skin touchups of the tinted moisturizer around T-zone and concealer for the under-eye area and any redness. And I have Tinted Brilliance Balm (today in Pretty Pink—I change the colour often), which I use to touch up lips and apples of the cheeks during the day. I’m low maintenance!

What do you not leave the house without?

My wallet, car keys and lip balm (my fave is Succulent Lip Twin in Vanilla Light).

Your favourite ways to multitask products in your line?

Some of my favourite alternative uses: Tinted Brilliance Balm on apples of the cheeks, and Natural Cheek Gel is great for a hint of a tint on lips. Flawless & Poreless Primer is great as a "blotting paper" on top of makeup during the day, while Eye Bright Liner is great as a lip highlighter to outline your lip contour before applying lip product.

Also, Flawless Beauty Primer is a great highlighter for light skin and you can mix it with any foundation to make it sheerer and give it some lustre.

With very little time to get ready, what top three things do you recommend doing when it comes to makeup?

1.     Curl your lashes and apply a primer that is tailored to your skin needs (whether your skin is dry or oily, if you need some glow or something longlasting, for example).

2.     Use a tinted moisturizer that doubles as a concealer by layering it.

3.     Lastly, some lip and cheek tint!

You’re a busy mom of two—how did your own makeup routine change when you became a mother?

I started to use more kits and multipurpose products; I always had but I really finetuned it, and I also travel now with a small makeup bag. Finding formulas that work for when you are really tired and your skin is acting up is also key—keeping it light and sheer is the trick. My Fake Awake Kit does the trick for most moms I know!

With your 20 years of experience as a makeup artist, any beauty words of wisdom to share?

Update your makeup seasonally—colours and formulas all change and improve. It’s key to update your look and not get stuck in the same makeup routine you had in high school. Plus, everything—from your skin to your colouring—changes, too.

The man, the mystery, the slippers.  As the Joe Fresh team busily preps for World MasterCard Fashion Week, Joe Mimran takes a brief minute to play 20 Questions with us. Read on to find out what’s on his playlist, how he likes his martini, and what really makes Joe Fresh tick -- behind the seams .

 1. Which of your collections are you most proud of so far?

I am proud of all of my collections, but I am always most excited by the collection I am working on at the moment. And as soon as the show is over I’m already thinking about what will come next

2. Do you get nervous when your wife and daughters go shopping?

No, my wife and children all have excellent taste.

3. What are your favourite restaurants in Toronto?

Harbord Room, Sotto Sotto, Giancarlo

4. Who do you rely on most in your business?

My whole team – every aspect of the business from supply chain to visual merchandising to marketing plays a key role in the success of Joe Fresh.  And of course, our loyal customers.

5.  Slippers vs. dress shoes. Discuss

Slippers – classic and so comfortable.

6. Favourite drink?

Martini – very dry, very cold – shaken.

7.  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always loved the arts but balanced my interest in art and design with a business degree.

8. What do you eat every day for breakfast?

Fresh squeezed vegetable juice.

9. What’s one piece from Joe Fresh that every woman should own?

A striped t-shirt.

10.  What is your favourite book?

14. What’s the main difference between doing business in Toronto and NY?

I believe we have created a very strong brand presence in Toronto and all across Canada where people know who Joe Fresh is and what we are all about. The New York shopper has every store at their fingertips, so when we first launched there it was really about differentiating ourselves from other brands and making a big impact.

15. After you’ve conquered the States, where do you hope to expand to next?

Right now we’re focusing on the launch of our JCP partnership across the United States – and of course our New York stand-alone stores. But we’re always on the look-out for the perfect location for new stores.

16.  If you could be teleported to a certain era/where would you stop?

The ‘60s – my favourite decade.

17.  Black & white or colour – which do you prefer?

The brand was built on colour but you’ll be seeing a lot of black this season.

18.  What is your favorite bottle of wine?

Chateau Margaux

iPhone

20. What is your favourite piece of Joe Fresh clothing for yourself?

Think going to the ladies’ room at work is awkward enough already? Imagine the retouch time on Mimi Bobeck's look on The Drew Carey Show. You might want to just hold it.

Don’t Flaunt Your Underbutt

Cerie
NBC

We have to admit, though, if we had a body like Liz Lemon's forever under-dressed assistant Cerie on 30 Rock we'd probably prance around in hot pants 24/7 too. HR be damned!

Don’t Forget Your Pants

Kate Flannery
NBC

Take note: Unlike Meredith Palmer on The Office, your casual Friday ensemble shouldn’t feature upper thigh. Also, a bra is always a good idea.

Don't Be a Boob

Julia Roberts
UNIVERSAL / THE KOBAL COLLECTION / MARSHAK, BOB

If, like Julia Roberts in Erin Brokovich, your cleavage could serve double duty as a pencil holder, you might want to consider covering up those tatas.

Don’t Short Skirt the Issue

Calista Flockhart
20TH CENTURY FOX / THE KOBAL COLLECTION / GORMAN, GREG

Calista Flockhart's look on Ally McBeal would never fly on Law & Order. I mean, they’re like real lawyers. Dun dun.

Don’t Give Up

Tina Fey
NBC

Liz Lemon, we love ya girl, we really do, but seriously, hand over the sweatpants to Cerie. They’re never the answer. Blerg!

Don’t Wear Your Snuggie

America Ferrara
ABC/BOB D'AMICO

Yes, we know the office's air conditioning could freeze your bits off. But a ginormous frumpy poncho like America Ferrera's on Ugly Betty might actually break an unknown HR rule: too-little skin exposed.

Don’t Be Silly

Beth Behrs
ROBERT VOETS/WARNER BROS

2 Broke Girls take note: Though we love a fab high heel for work, if you’re a waitress and, uh, it’s snowing, we’ll forgive you if you wear a pair of sneaks.

Justin Bieber Jumps on the Onesie Wagon! What's Up with This Trend?

Justin Bieber hasn’t only gotten in on the hair-shaving trend -- he's also now a fan of onesies! While on tour in Sweden, the 19-year-old pop star was spotted wearing a red one-piece outfit, and his friend Lil Za was next to him wearing a matching white onesie.

We've always known Bieber was a fan of hoodies, but we never expected that love to expand to this size -- literally. The onesie trend is sweeping through Hollywood, and it's got to be one of our least favorite fashion trends ever. Sure, it might look comfy, but it's neither flattering nor practical, if you ask us.

Miley Cyrus not only wore a onesie in a recent selfie, but she showed she could dance in it! The 20-year-old posted an image of herself wearing a silly horse onesie, and then followed up by sharing this hilariously awesome "twerk" video.

The boys of One Direction were a bit more sincere with their take on the onesie trend. Not only do they each have their own pair, but they also have matching accessories to go with them. This is not the way to win over the world's women, boys. (Or is it?)

As for Ryan Gosling, we'll give him a pass on the onesie trend since he only wore one publicly during an interview Ellen DeGeneres. Also, considering this video is from January 2011, we'll give him a double pass because it's so old -- and he's just so freaking cute.

But then there's Brad Pitt, whose black onesie seems to be entirely functional with no hint of irony -- which has us a bit worried. Maybe he doesn't want his kids to feel weird wearing their one-piece outfits, so he has one too? Or maybe they really are extremely comfortable. Whatever the cause, we're as concerned about his fashion sense now as we are about his hair length.

Woman We Love: Meet Sue Sinclair of Raspberry Kids

Meet Sue Sinclair, mom to three and founder and Chief Executive Mom at Raspberry Kids, an online shop for fun and eco-conscious toys and gear for kids. The entrereneurial mama shares what it's like to live in a "two entrepreneur household" (with husband Jeff), her kids' ‘melt your heart’ moments, thoughts on work-life balance, and the hardest thing about being a mom.

Mom of…
Daughter Jamie, age 8; son Riley, age 6.5; and newborn daughter Cailyn (age “Zero” as my kids say). Nicknamed “Muffin,” Cailyn joined our family on April 1st, 2013.

Are you a mom, mommy, or mama?
All of the above. Depends on the day and how the kids are feeling as to what they call me.

What inspired you to start Raspberry Kids?
After the birth of my kids, and simultaneously losing both of my parents and father-in-law, my perspective on my career changed drastically. I had no desire to return to the corporate world and longed for flexibility so that I could be a Mom but also work on my own terms. I opted to become my own boss and combined my passion for technology with sourcing quality products for kids into an online lifestyle store. I’ve since discovered I also have a passion for social media, and love interacting with the Raspberry Kids community on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, on our blog and through our newsletter.

What’s your work schedule like?
Schedule? What schedule? I suppose we did have a bit of a system up until the beginning of April when we added to our family with the birth of our third Raspberry Kid, but now we are more or less winging it. Since I’m up at night with our little one, my dear husband is taking the kids to school every morning and at this point we are just taking it each day at a time.

How do you handle childcare?
Our eldest kids are in grades 1 and 2, We have a lovely girl who picks the kids up at 3:00 pm and works with us until about dinner time. We have no family in town but we have some great friends who double as sitters when/if we need evening or weekend care. For the most part we spend a great deal of time together as a family.

Any advice for moms trying to juggle it all and find balance?
I don’t believe balance exists, but choice does. We choose to lead a full-on life and generally take on more than we should (my hubby is an entrepreneur, too). We seem to thrive on a busy lifestyle and tend to get bored easily whenever we have down time. Having a newborn in the house definitely means we have more to juggle, and we are going through an adjustment period (and will be for the foreseeable future) but that is what makes life fun and interesting and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What’s your mom kryptonite…the thing about your kids that melts your heart?
With my daughter it is her belief in magic, fairies and that she can be anything she wants which is currently a Pink Power Ranger. I love her confidence and want her to continue to believe that she is awesome! Her art and writings are very sweet, including a note she recently drew for her baby sister that read “To Baby, from Jamie I love you with all my heart.”

With my son, it is his generosity. He always wants to give toys to kids that are less fortunate and just yesterday he gave $10 to a friend at school who was saving to buy a “big ticket” item. He has a wicked sense of humor and loves the Canucks. I could listen to him call the play by play for hours. It’s absolutely priceless.

As for Muffin, just her presence makes me melt, never mind her goofy noises and facial expressions!

The hardest part of being a mom so far is…
Always wanting to do more. I want to go on every field trip, teach them more new life skills, read with them more, play with them more and protect them every minute of every day. Sigh.

The thing I cook way too frequently, but my kids love and will be taking home in Tupperware in 20 years is…
They love my roast chicken with gravy and smashed potatoes (a great recipe I found on Pinterest!).

Favourite kid’s book(s)?
There are so many we have loved over the years from Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to the Ivy and Bean series, and now the kids are thrilled to be able to read to their little sister which includes everything from facts about bears and storms to the ABCs. We love books with great illustrations such as Wave or Animals and their Families.

What’s your mom uniform?
My uniform ranges from yoga pants on the days when I’m going for my walks or runs to business casual when I take meetings with suppliers or other local business owners. Recently my wardrobe has been limited to maternity wear which I’m hoping to transition out of very soon. It gets tiring wearing the same outfits for ten months straight! I’m a big fan of scarves and necklaces, and for the next several months I’ll be wearing the ultimate accessory, my newborn daughter!

Best mom skill that only “mom” does?
In our house, I take on the role of planner and organizer and love it. This includes everything from our weekend to-do lists to elaborate travel plans and everything in between! I’m also currently on demand feeding our newborn, which is a skill only mom does and is time with my newborn that I cherish.

Make sure to check out Raspberry Kids online shop and follow Sue on Twitter @raspberrykids and on Facebook.
